| What treatment options are available for snoring and sleep apnea? | ||
| Snoring and sleep apnea both fall into the category of sleep-disordered breathing. Simple snoring represents a mild disorder where breathing becomes very loud, but the upper airway is only partially obstructed during sleep. You can make positive lifestyle changes to minimize your snoring. Helpful measures include loosing weight, quit smoking, receiving treatment for allergies, limiting or avoiding alcohol use or sedatives, and sleeping on your side instead of your back. Sleep apnea is a serious medical disorder that occurs because the airway is totally obstructed during sleep and the patient stops breathing completely for 10 seconds or more. Oral appliance therapy is one way to manage snoring and sleep apnea. This appliance may be used in conjunction with other therapies. Some appliances reposition and maintain the mandible (lower jaw) in a protruded position during sleep. This therapy may last for several weeks to months, and requires follow-up visits. In severe cases, the patient is referred to his or her physician for further evaluation and treatment, including the use of CPAP machine. | ||
