| What causes teeth discoloration? | ||
| Teeth discoloration has many contributing factors. Food staining, such as red wine, Kool-Aid, coffee, tea, as well as smoking or chewing tobacco, is considered to be major cause of teeth discoloration. Certain medications such as use of Tetracycline during development of the permanent teeth may cause mild to severe discoloration. Fluorosis may also present itself with mild to severe teeth discoloration. In some instances where the tooth has been traumatized in the past, the tooth discolors. To treat this condition, the patient needs to avoid drinking colored drinks. Subsequently, take home teeth whitening kits, or in-office teeth whitening are available to improve and in many cases remove the discoloration. In situations where the tooth has been discolored due to previous trauma, root canal therapy followed by internal teeth whitening may be recommended. In some cases, further treatments are necessary, including the use of microabrasion technique. As a last resort, veneers or crowns may be indicated. | ||
