What instructions should I follow after receiving my dentures?

The following denture home care instructions have been prepared to provide you with basic guidelines in home care:
1. Initially, avoid foods that require excessive biting force, such as raw vegetables, tough meats, and sticky foods (caramel pop corn, Chinese food, etc…) Use small portions of the food. In order to stabilize the dentures, place the food bilaterally (both sides) of the posterior chewing surfaces (towards the back of the denture). Use the canine and premolar areas to aid incision and biting. BE PATIENT AND PRACTICE.
2. Anticipate an increased salivary flow.
3. Upon sneezing, coughing, or yawning, anticipate loss of denture retention. Thus, cover your mouth with hands and handkerchief to avoid social embarrassment.
4. Speak slowly and quietly. Practice by reading aloud at home, preferably in front of a mirror. Repeat and practice words that seem most difficult.
5. After every meal, remove your prosthesis.
6. Fill up the sink with cold water. This is to prevent breakage in case you drop your prosthesis.
7. Using antibacterial soap and cold water, gently brush the tissue surface (under-side) of your denture(s) over the previously filled sink, using Lactona #500 denture brush (special double-headed toothbrush).
8. Never use warm or hot water on your prosthesis, as it will warp the prosthesis.
9. Never use regular toothpaste on your prosthesis, as toothpaste will wear away the acrylic.
10. Every night before bedtime, remove your prosthesis and immerse them in the denture cup supplied to you by Azmodent Smile Design Dental Group filled with cold water and one tablet of one of the following: Efferdent, Fixodent, or Polident.
11. Use damp gauze to massage your gums. This will help with circulation.
12. Never let your prosthesis be kept dry, as dehydration of the acrylic (plastic) will cause warpage. This can lead to a non-fitting prosthesis.
13. Never attempt to alter the denture for relief or discomfort. Do not buy and use over-the-counter self-reline materials, as they may be harmful to both the dentures and the tissues of your mouth.
14. Never use Clorox bleach and alcohol containing mouthwashes, namely Scope and Listerine on your prosthesis, as it will cause warpage as well as acrylic discoloration.
15. Commit to your annual denture recall visits, or as instructed by Drs. Foroutan and Tarighati.
16. If any sore spots develop or should you have concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the office for an appointment. Please do not attempt to adjust, repair, or alter your prosthesis.
